Pedestrian Safety

Whether it's for practical or recreational reasons, walking is a beneficial means of traveling. Walking can reduce traffic congestion, improve personal health, provide economic benefits, and positively impact the environment.

Walking can be a safe and enjoyable way to get to and from school. It is important to understand and practice how to be a safe pedestrian. Before heading out, children and parents are advised to wear the proper clothing to ensure that they e seen by motorists and bicyclists.  Knowing and observing the traffic safety rules of your community will also ensure a safer pedestrian experience.

Practice and encourage being a safe pedestrian:

Do not assume your child is aware of safety rules if they have not been properly taught.  Set limits for your children, on where they can bike or walk. Parks, trails, and playgrounds are examples of places away from streets and highways for children to walk safely. Teach your children how to cross the street properly.  Have them pay attention to traffic signals and road signs when walking on the street.

Here are a few tips to teach your children:

  • Only cross the street with an adult
  • When crossing look LEFT, RIGHT, then LEFT again
  • Cross at intersections where there are signals
  • Make eye contact to make sure the driver of a vehicle can see you.
  • Use the crosswalk at all times when crossing, and be aware of turning vehicles.
